Don’t just gain weight this Christmas. Use it as an opportunity to reflect on 2008 and plan for next year. It is a great time of year to evaluate and set yourself up for success in the New Year.

Will you make any New Years Resolutions?
Will they be the same list as last time?

More exercise, more prayer, more reading. Watch less TV, drink less coffee, cut out the diet coke.

Here’s the thought: use the time to re-establish your priorities. Do it in a way that is motivating and sustainable – aim for something. It will help with the discipline. Take a course to learn something specific to help you in your career. Lose weight for an event. Exercise for a marathon.

The same is true with spiritual disciplines. You need goals. When was the last time you seriously read your Bible. For example, in the past 5 years I have set the goal to read it through, cover to cover, in the first 6 months of the year. I don’t always manage 6 months but the discipline of reading my Bible has never left me.

For 2009 I will be setting some spiritual goals. This will include fasting more. It’s a discipline I have never been good at, not even for a day but I know that it is a great way to re-establish habits and priorities and help me kick start things and gain some spiritual momentum. [Will write a post about my goals another time]

What about you – what will you do in 2009 to gain some spiritual momentum?
