Might seem like an odd thing to do but here is a challenge for all of us – to take time out and think about all that comes out of our mouths. I dare you to give it a try. Maybe this list of the types of words can help us in our thinking…

  • Words of affirmation?
  • Words of encouragement?
  • Words of love, kind thoughts, helpfulness?
  • Words of comfort and peace?
  • Words of life?
  • Words of worship and adoration to our God?
  • Words of criticism?
  • Words of negativity?
  • Words of anger, obscenity, put downs?
  • Words of gossip, untruths, lies?
  • Words of hatred and disgust toward people?
  • Words of unnecessary opinion?

One thing that definitely becomes evident the more I read the gospels and observe Jesus, he was keen for people to know that if they label themselves as Kingdom people then every aspect of their life should line up with that,  including the words that come out of a persons mouth.

I wonder if I was really honest what percentage of my words fall into the first bunch rather than the second? I’m hoping that it would favour the more positive ones but some days, maybe not. How about you? Are we too quick sometimes to comment? Too quick to share an opinion? Too quick to think more highly of ourselves than we should? Maybe less quick to praise, encourage and support? Slower to just say nothing.

Jesus put it like this…

How can you speak good things when you are evil (wicked)? For out of the fullness (the overflow, the superabundance) of the heart the mouth speaks. The good man from his inner good treasure FLINGS forth good things, and the evil man out of his inner evil storehouse FLINGS forth evil things [Matthew 12:34-35]

Whichever side we lean more towards in respect of what we FLING from our mouths let’s work hard to keep improving and to make sure it is GOOD STUFF. Based on the words of Jesus the only way to ensure that this happens is to not only monitor what comes out but just as important is to monitor what goes in. Good words come from a heart full of good things. Eventually what is in our hearts will get the opportunity to FLING itself out of our mouths. If we want to be people known for GOOD WORDS then we have to remain diligent in filling our hearts with GOOD THINGS first.

It is a challenge but just because it isn’t easy doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do it
