Life can very easily get us down.

Things can quickly take a turn. Not necessarily for the worse, just a turn. Seemingly innocuous but nonetheless it causes us to feel unbalanced, a little out of sorts.

‘It’s normal.’ That’s what people will tell you. ‘We all have down days’.

Maybe that is true. Maybe it’s not.

One thing I do know from my own life and my own walk is that when life gets at you, it’s easier to look down than it is to look up. However, I want to encourage you to look up. Don’t give your attention to where you are walking, with the sole purpose of preventing yourself from falling, instead look up to the one you believe in, for when we do that, He does what He does best and will keep you from falling.

Is it really that simple? Possibly.

I can over complicate my life, I can rush around trying to figure things out, I can put myself in a fluster, I can tire myself out. I can think I know best. I can think I don’t know anything. It all leads me on the downward path.

Well-meaning people can be sympathetic, encourage me that it’s normal to doubt or remind me that it’s just a season and it will pass.

Yet, the Word of God encourages me to look up.

Lift up your heads, O you gates; be lifted up…that the King of glory may come in….The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O you gates; lift them up… [Psalm 24:7-10 Abridged]

Don’t look to circumstances, to people, to thinking, to the past or even the future. Instead… Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith’. [Hebrews 12:2]

I know it’s not easy. It’s almost counter-intuitive but my prayer is that if you believe that Jesus is your Saviour you will allow Him to be just that and for the Holy Spirit to lead you through the ‘fog’ into the clearness ahead.
