Today is Palm Sunday. One week before Easter Sunday. The day we recollect how the crowds celebrated Jesus, praising Him, proclaiming Him and showing Him honour as He road into Jerusalem on a donkey.

A few days later and many of the same crowd were calling for Him to be crucified, they were calling out abuse, ridiculing Him and denying Him instead.

James wrote how praise and pain can come from the same mouth, the same tongue.

From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. [‭‭James‬ ‭3:10‬ ‭ESV‬‬]

This is the ultimate example. I hope that my response to Jesus is not quite so severe.

Yet maybe, at times, I have celebrated Jesus, praised Him and glorified His name only to then, sometimes, without even noticing, I have ignored Him and denied Him.

Perhaps even my lifestyle has added more weight to that burden He carried on the cross as I knowingly sin and choose to not live in the fullness of all that He won for me at the cross.

Let’s be willing to take a moment of reflection. To check our hearts and our motives. To ensure that only praise comes from our mouth for Jesus and that pain, hurt, trouble and denial are not to be found, not towards Jesus or towards anyone else for that matter.

Let that be our prayer today.
