What Are You Reading At The Moment?

Went to Borders the other day. Love going there. Never really get to fully appreciate it when the girls are with me but I did get the opportunity to browse and checked out a few books that look interesting even alllowing for the pile I still have left over from last year!

Leaders are readers. You want to gain some knowledge then you need to be reading and I don’t mean just general fiction. You need to read stuff that will challenge you, inspire you, stretch you, teach you something. Start small. Don’t be intimidated by how much others read – have your own plan, set your own goal and go for it!

This is the last 10 books I have read – what do you think?
Vintage Jesus
Chazown
Turning Points
Starving Jesus
Wake Up Dead Man
Sticky Church
Moving in the Spirit
Meatball Sundae
Holy Discontent
IT

After any good recommendations. Come July I will be switching my emphasis from reading my Bible in BIG CHUNKS to reading from an ever increasing pile of books.

Let me know – WHAT ARE YOU READING? WHY WOULD I ENJOY IT?

Book Review: Starving Jesus by J.R. Mahon & Craig Gross

445481_1_ftc_dp1Respect. After being whacked round the head by reading this book…respect. To J.R and Craig for the work they do, for their honesty which was fairly brutal at times, for sharing their heart and the desperation they have to see Gods church out of the pew and into the world reaching people, which is summed up early on where it reads ‘Bottom line: Get off your butt and do something.

Loved the thoughts about being Born Again Lazy, how we have got lazy with outreach, with money, with families, with prayer, with fasting, with studying God’s Word, with him, with the lost.

Loved the thought about how we have lost our nerve as followers of Christ, that the early church knew that their message was so disturbing, so offensive, that they knew it meant death…that we have what we have because they did what they did. WOW!

Ignorable calling…how life is full of ignorables. I ignore my wife, my children, discipline, God. When you have a relationship with Christ, he calls you to action. When heard and ignored, the resulting action will always result in failure. How do you know you are ignoring God? If you asking the question, chances are you are.

Put down the life you think you need, and open yourself up to the life Christ has designed.

A dangerous thought as they suggest becoming outrageous, experimental, entrepreneurial, and bold. Steadfast in the idea that anything short of sin to drive the message of Christ into the world.

Some people will be offended by this book. The message, the way its written, the vulnerability, the passion, the 40 day fast and tour stuff. You cannot read it and not respond in some way. Thank God they are not just saying it but live it out too – warts & all! The honesty is challenging but if you love God then you will accept the challenge in the right way. It’s a call to a dangerous life, an exciting life, a faith-filled jumping out of the boat life – one I am determined to participate in, and as a Pastor grow a congregation that live it too.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book to ALL Christians. Be reminded about what you should be doing, how life can be lived. Get your copy here.

A Change of Season

Well this is my 100th post. Wow – never knew I had so much to say. Here is where I am at right now…

1. Just finished reading the Bible through for the year. For the past 5 years I have endeavoured to read the Bible in the first 6 months. It is an exercise in focus for me and getting the Word of God in to my life. I really enjoy it and every year is different. Verses hit me round the head, stuff to meditate on.

2. So the season changes…although I still keep reading the Word (a little everyday plus study for preaching), gone back to the Gospels, I now spend time reading a selection of books I have bought during the past 6-12 months…so here goes with the list:

No Perfect People Allowed by John Burke
Can We Do That? by Andy Stanley & Ed Young
Vintage Jesus by Mark Driscoll
Boundaries by Henry Cloud
They Like Jesus But Not The Church by Dan Kimball
For This I Was Born by Brian Houston
Simple Church by Rainer & Geiger
Preaching the Cross by Dever, Duncan, Mohler & Mahaney
Starving Jesus by Craig Gross & J.R. Mahon
Holy Discontent by Bill Hybels
Meatball Sundae by Seth Godin
Moving in the Spirit by Phil Pringle
Quiet Leadership by David Rock
Chazown by Craig Groeschel
Axiom by Bill Hybels
It by Craig Groeschel
Today Matters by John Maxwell
UnChristian by David Kinnaman
The Magic of Thinking Big by David Schwartz

Why read so much I hear you cry? To find inspiration, to be challenged, to learn and because I love too read. May not get through them all but better to aim higher.

3. Started a Life Coaching Course too. I have until 31 December 2008 to complete it.

4. Still praying..but if I’m honest the early mornings have drifted. Mostly because the kids are off school and I have let the discipline slip. I recognised today that letting that happen has effected my focus and thought patterns.

5. Thinking about vision all the time. I am not preaching until September 7th which is the launch of our Church year. We will be talking vision for a while so I am focused on that right now. I have some big dreams which no doubt I will unfold on here.

6. Wondering…where have all the comments gone. Don’t just read – share your thoughts too. I love to hear what others are thinking about, reading, journeying through. I find inspiration from everywhere – nothing more encouraging to my faith than hearing about what God is teaching you, leading you through or the victory He has brought.
