Being a Passionate Christian

What an incredible Sunday morning at Influence 2016. We packed a lot in. Check out the Xcel Church Facebook page for some photos.

Mal Fletcher spoke a great word at just the right time for us at Xcel. Preparing and positioning us for the influence God wants and needs us to have in the future.

Here my notes…

John 2:14-17

Events like 13/11 in France teach us that…

  • Civilisation is fragile
  • It’s important to engage the world
  • The emptiness of political correctness
  • You can’t legislate tolerance it starts in the heart

Gods moral laws are like walls – you don’t notice them until you walk into them
The Power of Passion:

  • Those in France had zeal without passion
  • We must meet people with a passion that at least matches the passion they have for their God/beliefs
  • Zeph 3:17 – God wants to spin around you under the influence of violent emotional
  • Passion is about controlled conviction, not just about emotion
  • Cast off the bland for the bold

How do I keep passion alive?
1. Maintain right priorities (Matt 6:33)

  • seek – almost to the exclusion of everything else
  • things – eat, clothes, essentials
  • kingdom of God – future hope & present reality

We are called to signpost people to that coming kingdom – by the way we live now
It’s where hearts are changed now – it’s the only kingdom you can’t get into without the kingdom getting into you
Things to know about God…

  • God will be where people least expect him to be
  • He will be doing what you least expect him to be doing
  • God needs to be expressed in every area of life

2. Learn to live with hunger

  • Hunger after righteousness
  • You cannot be passionate about Godly things if you are seeking satisfaction from earthly things
  • Let it be well with my soul

Thank you Mal for your teaching this weekend and provoking us to think about how we can and should express our Christianity every day

Use Your Goods

Thanks to Vicki Simpson for another great message and then a time of teaching about how to prophesy well.

Here are my notes…

  • As we see in Matthew 25, He gave his goods to us.
  • God never requires anything of you that He has not equipped you for
  • So, what do your goods look like? Whatever they are don’t underestimate them
  • What is key to increasing influence of Xcel? By usIng what you have. Faithful in a few.
  • Some of us are just not satisfied. We are not using our goods. We are just earthen vessels with treasure in. We just have to learn to step out in faith and use it.
  • 2 Corinthians 3:4-6 is a statement of insufficiency & inadequacy – but knows he is made sufficient by Christ
  • Just use the goods
  • To step out in faith, act like you have the sufficiency

Looking forward to the final session of the day with Mal Fletcher. Hope you will join us

City on a Hill

Loved this session from Mal Fletcher, to stretch the mind and my thinking.

The church is created for influence

Influence is not a product of how we manage the past and present but how we engage the future

Social change does not happen immediately but incrementally
To shape the future you must engage the present change
If we don’t shape the future, we will be shaped by it
Need a new ‘Theology’ of Thought – the importance of mind in Christian living

We have a 2-fold mandate

  • salvation – fishers of men
  • cultural – salt & light

Remember: Christ is the head of ‘ALL’ things
Find the tune the world is humming
Be willing to think about an answer and not just throw out a verse

About tech…questions to ask:

  • How can we use it to honour God
  • Exercise stewardship?
  • Build relationships?
  • Fulfil responsibilities?

A new theology of grace
= to include the previously excluded

  • Truth is the measure of our exclusion
  • Truth is what keeps us aligned with truth
  • Need both grace & truth

Fascinating stuff and so thankful for people like Mal Fletcher who cause us to think differently about how we live out out Christianity

Prophesy with Purpose

A message from the heart by Vicki Simpson this session

I was challenged by this first part – you are not living life at your natural pitch. As a result of something that has happened or been said we have made an adjustment.

Other key aspects of the message…

  • This church will flourish by all being who we are called to be
  • The church will only grow when everyone plays their part

Title: Prophesy on Purpose
Prophecy over yourself

Ezekiel 37:1-6 – picture of impossibility but God says I am going to cause them to live – to activate that which is inactive

Ezekiel 37:7-10 – the miracle happened

But before that…

  • Ezekiel was led by the spirit. Be spirit led. We become one spirit with God. We are alive in the spirit so let’s walk in the spirit
  • Ezekiel heard and declared (John 10:27)
  • our spirit is the device that God used to speak to us – we don’t pay the price to be connected to Jesus, He paid the price
  • know that we are His sheep and that we hear His voice
  • Ezekiel 37:11-12 – prophesy to the dry bones – it takes courage to do this

Thank you to Vicki for being someone who hears His voice.

What’s your highlight so far?
