Walk With God: Impossible Made Possible

A few years ago Honda had an advertising campaign all about making the impossible possible. It was innovative, creative and definitely caught your attention.

Dare I suggest that such a strap line could be used by God. He is all about ‘the impossible being made possible’. He is innovative, creative and definitely good at catching our attention.

For nothing will be impossible with God [Luke 1:37]

When those who can’t have children start having children, the impossible is being made possible. When God uses a young woman to bring the Saviour of the world into existence, the impossible is being made possible. And that was just the start.

Read through the Gospels and you discover moment after moment of impossibles being made possibles. Water into wine. Lame start to walk. Blind get their sight. Dead people being raised. People healed and in put in their right mind. Walking on water. Storms calmed. Multiples fed with a kids lunch. The worst of sinners forgiven. Religion put in its place.

Jesus laying down His life for us. His death for our new life. Transformational moments. Impossible made possible.

Then you examine your own walk with God and see His handprints all over it. God making moves behind the scenes. Creating opportunities. Bringing about His providential plan.

When I reflect I can see where He has moved the pieces. If certain things which I could not make happen had not happened I would not be where I am today. Don’t get me wrong, I was complicit in some of the actions but not in the final outcomes. God working out things from my indiscretions, for my good. Impossible made possible.

That is the God I walk with every day. So I should not be surprised when surprises occur. Maybe in my head I see the pleasure He takes in doing some stuff, a little glint in His eye as He speaks to me saying, ‘You didn’t see that coming, did you?’

Where have you seen the impossible made possible by God in your life?

An ‘Instead of’ God

In our walk with God we are going to be challenged to compromise what we believe and what we know to be true about our God. People have interesting views of God. Many see Him as some sort of big cosmic killjoy, sat ‘up there’ just waiting to strike us down when there is the first sign of us ignoring Him or behaving inappropriately.

Others feel that God cannot be interested enough in us, otherwise, if He really cared, He would act and do something about how the world looks.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Gods heart is towards people. It’s our heart that is not always toward God. All the work of the greatest exchange was accomplished by God, through His Son Jesus, done on our behalf and for our benefit.

He needs to become our ‘instead of’ God, a way of bringing to mind all that He has done for us. Think of where you may be if it was not for God. Instead of being there, you have been saved, set free and are walking on a different path of life and discovery.

In Psalm 30 King David dedicates the temple but more than that he is recognising the goodness of God, speaking out a testimony of truths that are still applicable today. When it comes to his life He sees God as the One who creates an ‘instead of’ exchange

Lifted up instead of brought down
Given help instead of left helpless
Favour and blessing instead of anger.
Joy instead of weeping.
Dancing instead of mourning.
Gladness instead of sackcloth.

Praise instead of silence.

What has God done for you that you could describe as an ‘instead of’ exchange?

It Is God Who Gives

You have given him his heart’s desire and have not withheld the request of his lips. Selah. For you meet him with rich blessings; you set a crown of fine gold upon his head. He asked life of you; you gave it to him, length of days forever and ever. His glory is great through your salvation; splendour and majesty you bestow on him. For you make him most blessed forever; you make him glad with the joy of your presence [Psalm 21:2-6]

As we walk with God, travel on the journey with Him through life, there are a number of things that maybe, as we mature, we become more aware of. I’ll give you my list.

One would be how little I really know. About anything, not just the spiritual stuff.
A second would be how much more I need God than I probably admit. His presence makes the difference.
The third would be how easily I forget that it’s His presence that makes the difference and just get on with life on my own.

Maybe a fourth would be recognising how patient God is with me, despite these first three on the list.

I could go on. Maybe you have some you would add to the list.

Without God, I can probably manage, but I just know that something is missing. In the midst of all the narratives that influence and impact my life, making time for the most important, what God has to say, cannot be overlooked.

Maybe the simple thing is to just take that time and acknowledge all the little ways in which God enhances my life, brings out the best in me, makes me look better than I really am, that in Him I am truly blessed.

He gives me my hearts desires. He answers my prayers.
He meets me with all that I need.
He crowns me with honour.
He gives me life, in all its fullness.
He makes me blessed.

He desires for me to enjoy being in His presence.

As much as I might think that all that I am, all that I could ever achieve or ever dream about in life comes from myself, I would be wrong. All that I have comes from my Father in Heaven. The one who loves to ‘fulfil the desires of my heart’, ‘who takes pleasure in the prosperity of His people’, ‘in whose presence there is fullness of joy’. I could go on.

It is God who gives. And all this despite my best efforts to mess things or miss things. It is God who gives, and it is in all this wonderful small ways that I must notice His giving and His love toward me, that I would rejoice, exalt His name and sing praise to Him, every day.

What have you forgotten that God has done or is doing for you?
What do you need to say thank you to God for?

A Cleansed and Grateful Life

Your cleansed and grateful life will bear witness to what I have done. [Matthew 8:4]

Maybe I try too hard.

Maybe I feel that big is better when it comes to God.

Maybe I make it too much about me.

Walking with God is about putting my life on show bearing witness to all that He has done for me. Nothing speaks louder that a cleaned up life, a life filled with thankfulness, a life that recognises all that God has done.

I am learning that simple is always the best and most effective way she it comes to my relationship with God. In light of this verse I wonder if my life is such a life? How about yours?

Reflective Moments

Then Moses said, “This is the thing which the Lord commanded: ‘Fill an omer with it, to be kept for your generations, that they may see the bread [manna] with which I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you out of the land of Egypt.’ “ [Exodus 16:32]

As we walk with God each day it is vital that we not only experience the moments with Him but find a way to capture those moments too.

I think it’s incredible how easily I can remember the minutest detail about some things, yet forget more important and recent information. I can definitely recall the tougher times and those times when things have gone horribly wrong. They come to mind quickly enough.

Instead, I have made the conscious decision of what’s important to me on my walk with God. I have decided to make a record of what God has done for me. To remember the goodness of God. I am encouraged when life takes a turn or I am believing God for an answer. He has come through before, He will come through again.

How do you make sure that you reflect on those God moments?

Some people keep a journal. Personally, I try and write down my prayers each day which means I can look back and see what God has been doing. Just be willing to find something that works for you, it might just save your walk with God.

What Can I Give Back?

What can I give back?
What can I give back to God for the blessings he’s poured out on me?

Psalm 116…gives a simple answer…
I’ll lift high the cup of salvation – a toast to God.
I’ll pray in the name of God.
I’ll complete what I promised God I’d do.
I’ll complete it together with his people.

My opinions must be put to one side.
Time for me can be given up.
Remember what God has done, celebrate that and live the best life I can…that must be made important, given time and honoured in the right manner.
Keep my promise.
Do my best to get along with God’s people.

I pray that I can do these well!!

God Changed Me

Never forget what God has done for you.

Working in church life all the time you can easily drift into ‘management’ and forget the ‘miracle’ aspect to what God has done and can do with your life. If I’m honest…it’s not difficult for that to happen. God changed me. It may not have been a dramatic transformation but when I accepted Jesus as my Saviour, I was changed. Not sure where I would be if I had not put God over my life.

Read Psalm 18 and see what He has done for you…

‘God rewrote the text of my life when I opened the book of my heart to his eyes’ [Psalm 18:24]

My life was changed.
My path was changed.
‘What a God! His road stretches straight & smooth. every God-direction is road-tested. Everyone who runs towards him Makes it’ [Psalm 18:30]

How about you…how has God changed you?

Telling Your Story

This year Xcel Darlington are taking on MASSIVE MARCH and as part of it I am looking for some of the Darlo partners to get filmed, telling their story. Actually, it’s more talking casually about 2 or 3 things that are different in their life because of having God in it!

There is power in the simplicity of someone just being honest, letting people know what God has done for them. It demonstrates God’s incredible grace, it makes people think about what He is actually capable of and you cannot argue with a life changed by God. To deny it, when you know the person, is to deny the wonder working power of our God.

It will take courage, it is a challenge, it might not come naturally but what a fantastic opportunity! Hearing a story could impact someone elses world. It may influence them to change their view on God. It doesn’t need to be dramatic, just good old-fashioned truth about what God has done. Can’t argue with that.

If you are part of Xcel Darlington and would be up for it…then let me know! Are you ready…to get locked on to your destiny?
